Consumers demand change! Sustainable packaging for fruits and vegetables

11 July 2024

Traditional plastic packaging, long dominant in the market, is becoming less and less desirable due to its negative environmental impact. In response to these challenges, producers and suppliers of fruit and vegetables are looking for more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Solid cardboard, thanks to its properties, is gaining popularity as a material that not only ensures the safety and freshness of products, but also minimises the ecological footprint, in line with the trend towards sustainability.

Consumers (in Poland) are demonstrating a growing environmental awareness and are clearly in favour of more sustainable practices in the use and production of packaging, as indicated by the results of the latest EKObarometer survey, conducted by the SW RESEARCH studio in cooperation with Akomex Group. The report shows that 65% of consumers surveyed believe that cardboard packaging has a lower negative impact on the environment compared to plastic. An overwhelming majority of respondents are in favour of increasing the use of cardboard in product packaging, and as many as 70% believe that cardboard packaging manufacturers should use recycled raw materials.

Akomex’s Nata Box solid cardboard packaging offers an innovative and environmentally friendly solution for the safe transport, storage and on-shelf display of fruit and vegetables. Thanks to its design and the materials used, the Nata Box offers a number of benefits for both the environment and the producers, suppliers and retailers of fruit and vegetables.

Ecology at hand with durability and safety

Nata Box packaging makes it possible to reduce the use of plastic by up to 90%, which has a direct, positive impact on reducing environmental pollution. The packaging is made of solid cardboard, a recyclable material, which means that once used, the packaging can be recycled and reused, thus contributing to a circular economy and sustainable development. Thanks to the use of solid cardboard, the packaging supports the environmental activities of companies and brands, fulfilling their business goals in line with their responsibility towards nature and future generations.

The surface of Nata Box packaging is coated with a special lipo- and hydrophobic barrier, making it resistant to the penetration of fats and water. The packaging is ideal for the sale of fruit and vegetables, ensuring their freshness and quality during transport and their stay on the shop shelf. The solid cardboard of which the Nata Boxes are made guarantees structural durability and excellent product protection. The glued patches provide stability, which is crucial during transport. The Nata Box solution offers the possibility to customise the packaging to meet specific market needs, including the use of individual prints, allowing for better brand and product presentation.

Nata Box packaging is also safe for food contact, which is extremely important for manufacturers and suppliers who want to ensure the highest quality and safety of their products. In addition, the use of eco-friendly materials builds a positive brand image, showing that the brand cares not only about the quality of its products, but also about the environment. Using Nata Box packaging can therefore increase consumer confidence in the brand and strengthen its position in the market.

Benefits in transport and logistics

In the context of logistics and supply chain management, Nata Box packaging offers significant improvements. Thanks to their durability and resistance to mechanical damage, they reduce the risk of product loss during transport. This in turn translates into lower operating costs for manufacturers and suppliers. In addition, the ability to easily print on cardboard allows relevant logistics information to be placed directly on the packaging, making it easier to identify and manage products at every stage of the supply chain.

Nata Box packaging also contributes to optimising storage and transport space. Thanks to their design, cardboard packaging is easy to fold and store, allowing for more efficient use of available space. This in turn leads to storage and transport savings, as more products can be stored and transported at the same time.

Aesthetics on the shop shelf

In a retail context, Nata Box packaging can attract customers’ attention with its aesthetic appeal and eco-friendly character. Increasing consumer awareness of environmental protection means that products packaged in eco-friendly packaging are perceived as more valuable. This can increase sales and improve brand perception in the eyes of consumers.

What’s more, the in-store display of fruit and vegetables in Nata Box packaging can attract consumer attention through an attractive and aesthetically pleasing design. The solid cardboard of which the packaging is made enables high-quality printing, which allows logos, product information and other graphic elements to be exposed. This makes products look modern and environmentally friendly, which can encourage customers to buy them. Aesthetically pleasing and carefully designed packaging can stand out from the competition, attracting the eye and interest of shoppers. Nata Box eco-friendly packaging can therefore be an important part of a marketing strategy, increasing the attractiveness of products on shop shelves.

In summary, Nata Box solid cardboard packaging offers a complete solution for the fruit and vegetable producer and distributor industry, combining environmental benefits with high functionality and product safety. Changing the raw material from plastic to solid cardboard benefits the environment as well as producers, suppliers and retailers, promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility.
